Yes, we can meet our growing need for water and prevent local farmland from drying up.

Just like school or fire districts, water suppliers must expand their services as populations increase. Unfortunately, northern Colorado has built very little water infrastructure during the past 15 years. And it's been more than three decades since we built a new storage reservoir. Projects that plan for future water needs are necessary and desperately needed.

NISP is the answer.

A regional water supply project coordinated by the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, NISP will provide 15 participating communities and water districts with 40,000 acre-feet of new, reliable water – without drying up the Poudre River or our agricultural communities.

After examining hundreds of alternatives within the South Platte, St. Vrain, Big Thompson, and Cache la Poudre watersheds in 2003, Northern Water and NISP partners agreed to a combination of Glade Reservoir and the South Platte Water Conservation Project (SPWCP).

The plan includes Glade Reservoir, a pumping facility, a pipeline to deliver water for exchange with two irrigation companies, and needed improvements to an existing canal to fill Glade Reservoir.

At 170,000 acre-feet, Glade Reservoir is slightly larger than neighboring Horsetooth Reservoir. Construction of Glade Reservoir will require the relocation of seven miles of U.S. Highway 287 northwest of Fort Collins. As a part of this project, area farmers will help fill Glade Reservoir by allowing the project to use Poudre River water they have used for more than a century.
